Phat Buddha is a one size fits all yoga wear brand based out of New York, New York. We caught up with the brand’s founder, Alissa Benishai!
How did you get started with yoga?
I was working in Florida about six and a half years ago and I looked happy on the outside, but wasn’t on the inside. I wasn’t happy with way I looked, and then I took my first yoga class. It encouraged me to “be yourself the way that we see you,” and that helped me to feel better from the inside out.
When did you realize you wanted your brand to be yoga based?
I wanted to help other people feel good about themselves. After I finished yoga training in Hawaii [in 2009], I knew I wanted to create a brand that wasn’t condensed to size, so I created a seamless one size fits all construction that we wear to define ourselves by our movement.
What are the the benefits of yoga that YOU personally see?
Personally, dealing with business, family, going on dates and so on comes with a lot of noise. Whether I’m taking a class or teaching it, I always get to check in with myself and realize I’m only responsible for actions based on thoughts.
Why is it important for people who work in demanding industries such as fashion to regularly exercise?
I think it’s important to take a small moment of gratitude to realize where you are in life and being happy with it.
What other types of exercise or relaxation would you suggest to people in the creative field?
That’s really up to your own discretion. I do recommend daily meditation for any creative person. Whether it’s 30 seconds or 30 minutes, meditating after every workout is important so that you can really hone in on what needs to be done.
Any advice for anyone in the fashion industry?
Never give up on yourself! I think everything can be challenging, but just because it’s challenging doesn’t mean you have to give up.
